Ok, I took my wife and went on a double date with my parents to see Star Trek XI and I am pleased to say that it was much better than I had feared.
I remember my father openning up his box set of original Star Trek movies for Christmas back when I was a child. The image of their packaging etched in my memory. Each jacket in succession created the image of the USS Enterprise. With all my time spent playing SEGA games, drawing pictures, building legos, or playing as a superhereo, it is easy to see how the concept of space adventure could capture my attention.
I've probably seen the Wrath of Kahn more times than I have seen the rest of the original movies put together. I knew the characters and learned as much as I could about their histories. There was such a rich universe of possibilities provided with in that idea of man breaking free of the confines of this solar system and James T. Kirk was Captain of my dreams.
So as I went to the movie 45 years after its original TV debute, somewhat skeptical, I discovered an acceptible transition from the Trek I know to the Trek my children will know. Of course it is hard for me to watch the movie and just accept that the door has closed on my original cast and that beautiful ship but I am just as glad to see a new crew take on discovery using whatever they have at their disposal to continue the vision that was started by Gene Roddenberry.
